Welcome to the website of the Church of Our Saviour Australia

and Church of Our Saviour Charitable Trust.

"A life without religion and spirituality is a life of emptiness."

Our site is more than the promotion of the Church of Our Saviour religion in Australia. We aim to provide a site for the discussion and promotion of religion in general, spirituality and other lifestyle topics. There are numerous different religions and churches in society and most are essentially focused on the same principle, that is, the belief and worship of a greater spiritual being e.g. God and/or Satan.

We feel that rather than promoting a single religion, it is more beneficial to offer a site that is open to discussion on all religious beliefs, whether it be "main stream" or "occult". We hope that by highlighting the various religions and churches and discussing their core beliefs, it may challenge you to consider and possibly act on your own values. It is our opinion that religion adds an important structure and guidance to your life. To have religion as part of your life, no matter what faith it may be under, is more important than having no religious or spiritual beliefs at all.

Our Definition of Religion

Religion can be described as a "way of life". It is often seen as a common core belief focusing on either a system of thought, spiritual being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. In addition, certain moral values, practices, scriptures, traditions, rituals, and institutions are often associated with the core belief, and these may overlap with concepts in secular philosophy.

The Role of Churches

The role of churches within society is primarily one of moral guidance through the advancement of religious beliefs and principles. While there will be differences in worshipping practices between each religion, churches should always be that strong moral voice within the community guiding people on the line of "right and wrong".

Churches also have an important role to play in the helping of the less fortunate and disadvantaged. They have the opportunity to use its standing within the community to raise funds and collect donations from the generosity of both businesses and the general public, for redistribution to those in most need of help.

Religion in Australia

The history of religion in Australia begins with that of the traditional owners of the land, the Aboriginal people. The religion of Indigenous Australians is described as The Dreamtime and is considered amongst the world's most ancient cultures. Aboriginals refer to the Dreamtime as a way of explaining their existence. Their beliefs and spirituality is intrinsically connected to the land and specific sacred sites.

In 1788 European settlement of Australia introduced Christianity through the strong representation of Roman Catholics. Further settlement during the 1800's then saw the introduction of other churches such as Catholic, Church of England (now called the Anglican Church), Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran and Methodist.

Following World War II, European migration led to a strong growth in the number of Catholics. Those migrating from the devastation of the war also led to an increase in the Jewish community, Orthodox Churches, and the creation of many ethnic parishes amongst the other denominations.

Today Australia is still predominately a Christian country with approximately two-thirds of the population belonging to a Christian denomination. According to a nationwide Census conducted in 2006, the top religion in Australia is that of the Catholic Church followed by the Anglican Church.
